How to Renew Your North Dakota Real Estate License

North Dakota real estate Salespersons, Broker Associates, and Brokers renew their licenses annually. All licenses expire December 31. To renew as active, complete the required continuing education (CE) and submit your license renewal before the deadline.

Step 1: Complete the Required Continuing Education

North Dakota resident Salespersons, Broker Associates, and Brokers must complete 12 hours of continuing education beginning November 16 until November 15 of the following year.

There are no mandatory topic hours or courses for the 2026 CE cycle.

Special Situations

• New Salespersons: New resident Salespersons who completed a 90-hour prelicense course are exempt from CE for their first renewal. New resident Salespersons who completed a 45-hour prelicense course must complete 15 hours of post-licensure education within one year of becoming licensed instead of the standard 12-hour CE requirement for that year.
• New Brokers: Brokers who passed the broker license exam during the current CE cycle are exempt from CE for that cycle.
• Non-Resident and Reciprocal Licensees: Meet the CE requirements of your state of residence instead of North Dakota’s CE requirements.
• Long-Term Licensees: Licensees who have been continuously licensed since January 1, 1969 are exempt from CE.
• Reactivating an Inactive License: To return an inactive license to active status, you must meet the CE requirements for each CE cycle the license was inactive, up to three CE cycles. The CE must have been completed within the three years immediately before reactivation.

North Dakota accepts CE courses approved by the North Dakota Real Estate Commission (NDREC) as well as courses approved by other state real estate commissions.

Important: Complete all required CE by November 15. There is no grace period for completing CE. If you do not complete your CE by the deadline, you must renew as inactive to avoid potential disciplinary action.

Step 2: Verify Your Course Completions

Before beginning your renewal, download and save your OnlineEd completion certificates for all required CE. NDREC does not track or maintain your CE records, so keep your certificates as proof of completion.

Step 3: Complete Your License Renewal

North Dakota real estate licenses are renewed online through the North Dakota Real Estate Commission.

To renew your license:

1. Go to the North Dakota Real Estate Commission Online Services page and select your license renewal option.
2. Log in, review your license and contact information, and make any necessary updates.
3. Complete the required renewal questions and indicate whether you are renewing as active or inactive.
4. If renewing as active, provide the required CE and errors and omissions insurance information.
5. Pay the applicable renewal fee.
6. Submit your renewal and save your confirmation for your records.

Renewal Fees

Renewal fees are paid when you submit your online renewal.

• Salesperson renewal fee: $125
• Broker Associate and Broker renewal fee: $150

Additional Tips

• Renewal Deadline: The on-time renewal deadline is November 15. Licenses expire December 31 each year.
• Late Renewal: You may renew through January 15 of the following year by paying the applicable late fee. This late renewal period does not extend the November 15 CE completion deadline.
• Inactive Licenses: An inactive licensee cannot conduct compensated real estate business in North Dakota. An inactive license may be maintained indefinitely as long as it is renewed annually.
• Daily CE Limit: North Dakota does not limit the number of CE hours you may complete in one day.
• License Status: Use the North Dakota License Lookup to verify your license status.
