How to Renew Your Virginia Real Estate License

Virginia real estate Salespersons and Brokers must renew their licenses every two years. Licenses expire on the last day of the month of initial licensure, as assigned by the Virginia Real Estate Board (under the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, or DPOR).

To keep your license active, you must complete your continuing education (CE), ensure your courses are reported, and submit your renewal before your expiration date.

Step 1: Complete the Required Continuing Education

Virginia requires 16 hours of CE for Salespersons and 24 hours of CE for Brokers every 2 years.

For licenses expiring on or after June 30, 2026, CE requirements are as follows:

Salespersons must complete:

Brokers must complete:

All courses must be approved by the Virginia Real Estate Board, and duplicate courses do not count.

Important: You may renew before your CE credits are posted, but your license will not be fully updated until your course completions are reported to DPOR.

Step 2: Verify Your Course Completions

Course providers report course completions to DPOR, typically within five days of completion.

Before renewing, allow time for course reporting. You may renew your license before CE credits appear in the system, but your license will not be fully updated until your course completions are processed. Retain copies of your completion certificates in case of an audit.

Step 3: Complete Your License Renewal

Virginia real estate licenses can be renewed online through the DPOR Online Services Portal or by submitting a renewal by mail using your renewal notice.

  2. Select your license and choose the renewal option
  3. Review your personal and license information
  4. Complete the renewal application
  5. Pay the renewal fee
  6. Submit your application

After submitting, you will receive confirmation, and if all requirements are met upon payment, your license will be automatically renewed in the system.

  2. Include a check or money order payable to the Treasurer of Virginia
  3. Mail your form and payment to:
