How to Renew Your New Jersey Real Estate License

New Jersey real estate Salespersons, Salesperson Referral Agents, and Brokers must renew their licenses every two years. The current license expiration date is June 30, 2027, for all active licenses.

To maintain an active license, you must complete your continuing education (CE) by April 30 to avoid late fees, submit your portion of the renewal, and ensure your Broker of Record completes the renewal before your license expires.

Step 1: Complete the Required Continuing Education

New Jersey requires 12 hours of continuing education for each renewal cycle.

Salesperson and Broker licensees must complete:

• 6 hours in Core topics, including a minimum of:
  • 2 hours in Ethics
  • 1 hour in Agency
  • 1 hour in Fair Housing and New Jersey Law Against Discrimination
• 6 hours of elective courses or additional core courses

Excess core credits may count toward elective requirements, but elective credits cannot replace required core topics.

All courses must be approved by the New Jersey Real Estate Commission (NJREC) and completed within the current renewal cycle.

Important: Licensees who complete CE between May 1 and June 30 of the renewal year may still renew an active license, but the NJREC will impose a $200 late CE fee. CE must be completed and reported before beginning renewal. Waiting until late June may delay your ability to renew on time.

Special Situations

• First Renewal: If licensed in the second year of the cycle, CE is not required (but renewal is still required). If licensed in the first year, full CE is required.
• Referral Agents: Must renew but are not required to complete CE.
• CE Exemption: Brokers or broker-salespersons licensed for 40 years or more may qualify for exemption.

Important: Complete your CE before renewal. CE must be completed by April 30 (odd-numbered years) to avoid a late fee. If completed after April 30, you may still renew by June 30, but a $200 late CE fee applies.

Step 2: Verify Your Course Completions

New Jersey uses the PSI Continuing Education Portal to track CE credits.

Course providers report your completed courses, typically within 1–2 business days, though processing times may increase during peak renewal periods. Log in to your NJREC PSI account to confirm your credits have been reported before beginning renewal.

Keep your course completion certificates for your records.

Step 3: Complete Your License Renewal

New Jersey real estate licenses are renewed online through the NJREC Online Licensing Services system, with final approval completed by your Broker of Record.

To renew your license:

1. Log in to the NJREC Online Licensing Services system
2. Complete the qualifying questionnaire
3. Complete your portion of the renewal: NJREC offers detailed instructions on the Qualifying Questionaire.
4. Coordinate with your Broker of Record to finalize the renewal

Your license will not be renewed until your Broker of Record completes their portion of the process.

Additional Tips

• Renewal Timing: Licenses expire on June 30 of every odd-numbered year. Renew on time to maintain an active status.
• CE Timing: Complete CE by April 30 to avoid late fees.
• Late CE (not Late Renewal): If CE is completed after April 30, a $200 late CE fee will apply.
• Broker Responsibility: Your Broker of Record is responsible for finalizing your renewal. Always confirm your license has been included in your broker's submission.
• Verify Credits: Always confirm your CE credits are posted in PSI before renewing. CE reporting may take several business days, and delays can prevent timely renewal.
• Expired or Inactive License: If your license is not renewed by June 30, it will expire. Depending on how long the license has been expired or inactive, additional reinstatement or reactivation requirements may apply, including completion of CE for the prior renewal cycle and NJREC reinstatement procedures.
• Over 2 Years Expired: A license expired for more than two years cannot be reinstated.
• Referral Agents: No CE is required, but renewal is still mandatory.
• License Status: You can verify your license status at any time through the New Jersey Real Estate Licensee Search, which allows you to search by name, license number, or status (active, inactive, suspended, etc.).
• Pocket License: You must carry your license (digital or printed) whenever conducting real estate business and be able to present it upon request.
