If you want to sell insurance in California, you must be licensed by the California Department of Insurance (CDI). Whether you plan to work in Life, Accident and Health, Personal Lines, or Property and Casualty insurance, OnlineEd makes it easy to prepare for the licensing exam and complete the required education, all online and on your schedule.
In California, individuals commonly referred to as "insurance agents" or "brokers" must be licensed as insurance producers. To qualify for licensure, an insurance producer must pass the appropriate licensing exam and complete the 12-Hour California Insurance Code and Ethics course before a license can be issued.
To become a California insurance producer, you must obtain a license for the specific lines of authority you want to sell. The general steps include:
Start by reviewing the Candidate Information Bulletin and California License Examination Objectives for the license you want to earn. OnlineEd's insurance exam preparation courses are built around these objectives, helping you focus on the topics tested on the exam.
California insurance exams are administered by PSI. What to expect when scheduling and taking the PSI examination:
Begin by selecting the exam needed based on the line of authority being sought. Then choose an available test option offered by PSI, such as a test center appointment or remote proctoring, depending on availability.
Note: Applicants with disabilities or those who may have difficulty taking the examination may request alternative testing arrangements by submitting a test accommodation request.
On the day of the examination, arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled examination time and present a valid government-issued photo ID with a signature.
At the end of the examination, the pass or fail result is displayed on screen, and a score report is emailed to the examinee.
After passing the exam, submit your fingerprints through a California Department of Insurance approved Live Scan vendor as part of the background check process.
How to submit and properly record your fingerprints:
Begin by accessing the Department's Capital Live Scan (CLS) online portal to register, pay the $74 fee, and schedule an appointment at one of over 800 live scan locations statewide.
On the day of the Live Scan appointment, present your 7-character Payment ID or QR code generated during registration, along with a valid government-issued photo ID, to the fingerprinting technician.
After the Live Scan process is completed, keep a copy of the Request for Live Scan Service (BCIA 8016) form for your records.
Once fingerprinting is submitted, the Automated Transaction Identifier (ATI) number will be available on the Department Portal page and will also be emailed to you for reference.
All insurance producers must complete 12 hours of California Insurance Code and Ethics before a license can be issued. OnlineEd offers this course entirely online and CDI-approved.
Submit your license application through Sircon, the California Department of Insurance's online licensing system. When starting a new application, select the "New Insurance License" to apply for an insurance producer license or to add a new line of authority.
OnlineEd provides California insurance education to help individuals prepare for licensure as insurance producers in Life, Accident and Health, Personal Lines, and Property and Casualty insurance.
