How to Renew Your Louisiana Real Estate License

Louisiana real estate Salespersons and Brokers must renew their licenses annually. All licenses expire on December 31 each year, with a timely renewal deadline of September 30.

To renew, you must complete your continuing education (CE) and submit your renewal during the renewal period to avoid delinquent fees.

Step 1: Complete the Required Continuing Education

Louisiana requires 12 hours of CE each year for active licensees.

Active Salespersons must complete:

• a 4-hour Mandatory course (annually defined by the Louisiana Real Estate Commission)
• 8 hours of elective course topics

Active Brokers and Associate Brokers must complete:

• a 4-hour Mandatory course (annually defined by the Louisiana Real Estate Commission)
• a 4-hour Mandataory Broker course (required for 2026 renewals)
• 4 hours of elective course topics

Important: You may renew your license before completing CE, but all 12 hours must be completed by December 31. Failure to meet this deadline is a violation and may result in fines.

Step 2: Verify Your Course Completions

All course providers in Louisiana are required to report completed courses to LREC.

Before renewing, log in to your MyLREC Portal account to verify your continuing education has been reported. You should also retain copies of your course completion certificates for your records.

Step 3: Complete Your License Renewal

Louisiana real estate licenses can be renewed online through the MyLREC Portal or by submitting a paper renewal.

To renew your license:

1. Log in to your MyLREC Portal account (or create one if needed)
2. Select "Renew License"
3. Select the license you would like to renew
4. Choose your renewal method:
   • Click "Renew Your License Online" to complete the online renewal
   • Click "Print Paper Renewal" to print and submit a paper renewal to the LREC
5. Complete and review your application
6. Provide proof of Errors and Omissions (E&O) Insurance or purchase coverage through LREC
7. Pay the required renewal fees
8. Submit your renewal

After submitting, you will receive confirmation of your renewal.

Additional Tips

• Renewal Timing: The timely renewal period is August 1 through September 30. Late renewal fees apply after September 30.
• CE Timing: All continuing education must be completed by December 31 each year.
• Expired License: You may not engage in real estate activities after your license expires. Failure to renew by December 31 results in loss of renewal rights, and you must reapply as a new applicant.
• Late Renewal: A $50 delinquent fee applies from October 1 through November 15. A $200 delinquent fee applies to active licenses and $50 for inactive licenses from November 16 through December 31.
• E&O Requirement: Active licensees must provide proof of Errors and Omissions Insurance or purchase coverage through LREC during renewal.
• First Renewal: Post-license education (45 hours) must be completed within 180 days of initial licensure. It may count toward elective CE hours, but does not satisfy mandatory course requirements.
• License Status: You can verify your license status and expiration date through your MyLREC Portal account or by using the LREC License Lookup.
