To become a real estate agent, you need a real estate license. Each state requires and issues its own real estate licenses. To obtain a real estate license, you need to:

What do I need to get a real estate license?

A Real Estate Salesperson License is required of individuals who are to be employed as salespersons under the supervision of a licensed broker. A license may also be obtained by a person who does not immediately intend to be employed by a broker. However, a salesperson without an employing broker may not perform acts requiring a real estate license. The license authorizes real estate activity only if the salesperson is in the employ of a licensed broker.

Minimum Requirements to Apply for the Salesperson Exam and License:

• You must be 18 years of age or older to be licensed.
• Proof of legal presence in the United States is required. If you are not a California resident, contact the California Department of Real Estate for further information.
• Applicants must be honest and truthful. Conviction of a crime may result in the denial of a license. Failure to disclose any criminal violation or disciplinary action in an applicant's entire history may also result in the denial of a license.
• Successful completion of the following college-level courses is required to become a real estate salesperson:
  1. Real Estate Principles (must be completed or in progress to apply for examination and must be completed prior to applying for a license).
  2. Real Estate Practice (must be completed prior to applying for a license or within 18 months of license issuance).
  3. One course from the following list (must be completed prior to applying for a license or within 18 months of license issuance):

• After you have completed your required education, you must first register for and then pass a written examination. Those who pass the examination are provided a license application which must be submitted to and approved by the DRE.

How long does the course take to complete?

The courses satisfy the 135 hour requirement of the California Department of Real Estate. Because the course is mastery-based and not time-monitored, students can work at their own pace. Some students may take more or less time than the course is rated for. Course access is available for one year from enrollment. Extensions can be made available on request.

What topics are covered in the course?

The complete OnlinEd license training package consists of three separate 45-hour courses which make up the total 135 hour requirement:

• California Real Estate Principles
• California Real Estate Practice
• Legal Aspects of Real Estate

Each course is broken down into chapters. Each chapter has a review quiz. There is a final exam at the end of each course that requires a 75% or better score to pass. Your education is complete when all three courses are finished.

Upon enrollment, you will be assigned a course instructor. You can contact your instructor if you need help understanding the material, have questions, or need help getting through the course. In addition, the instructor will review and (if necessary) comment on each quiz and the final exam to assist you in understanding course concepts better.

What do I need to take the course?

If you can read this, you already have everything you need! The course is entirely web-based. You will be able to access your account from any computer with an internet connection. The OnlineEd system works will all major browsers and operating systems.

What is "exam prep"?

This a bonus course to help you study for the state licensing exam. It contains hundreds of questions likely to appear on the state exam that you can use to practice with.
